1.16. mutt

Your mutt will need to be compiled with IMAP support. Depending on your operating system or distribution, this may not be the default for your mutt package.

Recompiling mutt is outside the scope of this article; please see your operating system or ports vendor help documentation for more information.

You can check to see if your mutt is configured properly by looking at the output of mutt -v. You should see a +USE_IMAP flag.

To connect to Mailstore using mutt, add the following to your configuration file (typically .muttrc):

set imap_user="youraddress@pobox.com"

set imap_pass="Your Pobox Password"

set spoolfile={mail.pobox.com/ssl}

set folder={mail.pobox.com/ssl}

mailboxes {mail.pobox.com/ssl}

If you'd like to relay mail through the Pobox SASL systems using your local MTA, please see our Postfix or ssmtp configuration pages.

1.17. ssmtp

If you don't have a fully-fledged MTA running on your local system, but would like to relay mail through the Pobox SASL servers, you might want to have a look at ssmtp. You may find this especially useful in conjunction with using mutt to connect to your Mailstore account.

The following guide describe configuring ssmtp in some depth:

To use ssmtp with Pobox, use the following settings:

mailhub=smtp.pobox.com

rewriteDomain=pobox.com

hostname=pobox.com

FromLineOverride=NO

UseTLS=YES

UseSTARTTLS=YES

AuthUser=youraccount@pobox.com

AuthPass=Your Pobox Password

1.18. Postfix

In your postfix main.cf, enter the following:

smtp_sasl_auth_enable = yes

smtp_sasl_password_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/smtp_passwd

smtp_sasl_security_options = noanonymous

smtp_sasl_tls_security_options = noanonymous

relayhost = [smtp.pobox.com]:26

In /etc/postfix/smtp_passwd, enter:

smtp.pobox.com youraccount@pobox.com:YOUR PASSWORD

Remember, smtp_passwd is a transport map. To compile the hash table that postfix will use, you'll have to run:

postmap /etc/postfix/smtp_passwd

Messages sent via Postfix are subject to the same outbound limits as messages sent by other programs, so don't queue 100 messages, then connect and deliver them all at once.... they will start getting rejected once you hit the outbound limits.

The Postfix manual advises that you should "keep the SASL client password file in /etc/postfix, and make the file read+write only for root to protect the username/password combinations against other users.  To do so, execute (as root or using sudo):

chown root:root /etc/postfix/smtp_passwd

chmod 600 /etc/postfix/sasl_passwd

After you've executed postmap, also check that smtp_passwd.db is also root:root and 600.

Thanks to rjbs, gevrey and brian.white for supplying the details!

    1. Thunderbird will attempt to find the proper mail servers here, but to ensure you have the correct settings, please click the button on the top right of this pane, which will be either "Edit", or "Stop" (then click "Edit").

Find Incoming and Outgoing Servers

    1. Thunderbird 3 will continue to try to "guess" the correct Incoming Mail settings as you are filling them in, so we will be filling most of these in within the Manual Setup. Before we do so, however, some of this pane must be filled in to properly set up the account. Start with filling in all of the Outgoing line:

Outgoing: smtp.pobox.com

SMTP

Port: 465

SSL/TLS  (This is important!  Using STARTTLS will cause errors and unusual disconnects.)

Then make sure the Incoming line has been switched from "POP" to "IMAP", and click "Manual Setup".

Type Incoming and Outgoing Servers

    1. Make sure that the following information is filled in:

Server Type: IMAP Mail Server

Server Name: mail.pobox.com

Port: 993

User Name: Your Pobox Address

Connection security: SSL/TLS  (this is important!  Using STARTTLS will cause errors and unusual disconnects.)

Server Settings

  1. Click OK, and OK again to the pop-up warning. You have finished setting up Thunderbird 3 to send and receive your Pobox mail.

(NOTE: Thunderbird 3 seem sluggish to you? You aren't the only one. Click that link to go to Mozilla's community-powered support page for this issue. There, you can compare your program's performance with other Thunderbird users' slowness reports, and try a few possible fixes at your own risk.)

(You may also want to refer to this page here for another configuration change. Thanks to Wayno for the details!)
