Using Street Atlas USA Map Docs on the Web

If you have Delorme's Street Atlas USA, you can click on Map Docs on the World Wide Web and automatically display them with Street Atlas. This will only work if your web browser and the web server recognize the Map Doc MIME types. Netscape Communicator and Microsoft Internet Explorer have SA3 and SA4 MIME types built in. Netscape Navigator and most other browsers do not. I do not know of any web server with SA MIME types built in. Street Atlas 5.0 is new and the SA5 MIME type would only be built in to the newest versions of web browswers, if at all. A special case is Windows 95 OEM release b and Internet Explorer. IE is able to use associations of file name extensions with applications. This will work whether the web server knows about the file type or not.

Lack of web server support can be circumvented by using gzip'd files, except that I can't get Windows 95 Netscape to run gzip.exe when getting a .gz file. Linux Netscape does fine, but there is no Street Atlas for Linux. Sigh ...

Lack of web server support can be circumvented by using ftp instead of http to get SA files. Unfortunately, this is much slower, and I have never been able to get it to work for a browser inside a firewall.

Web page authors using Apache servers can support custom MIME types. See below.

Web browser/server configuration instructions.

via http

Star Hill to Bear Gulch (SA3)

Star Hill to Bear Gulch (SA4) SA3 can NOT read SA4 files!

via ftp

Star Hill to Bear Gulch (SA3) This works great for me!

Star Hill to Bear Gulch (SA4) SA4 version.

get gzip'd files via http

Star Hill to Bear Gulch (SA3) Let me know if you can get Netscape/Windows 95 to automatically unzip these files.

Star Hill to Bear Gulch (SA4) SA3 can NOT read SA4 files!
